Belgian comics

Belgian comics form a distinct subgroup in the history of European comics and played a major role in their development, alongside their French counterparts, with which they share a long common history.

While the comics in the two main languages of Belgium (Dutch, spoken in Flanders, and French, spoken in Wallonia) each have clearly distinct characteristics, they are constantly influencing each other, and meet in bilingual Brussels thanks to the major publishing houses’ tradition of publishing in both languages. As one of the arts in which Belgium has had an international and enduring impact in the 20th century, comics are considered there to be “an integral part of Belgian culture”.

At “Chez Léon”, we decided to pay tribute to our childhood favourites, or at any rate to the most iconic albums of Belgian comic culture, such as Largo Winch, Agent 212, Spirou, Boule and Bill, Lucky Luke, Thorgal, Léonard …
